INSTRUCTIONS TO AUTHORS FOR SURVEY REVIEW

This set of Instructions to Authors incorporates all previous versions and authors are requested to follow this as nearly as possible. New authors to Survey Review are advised to study back-issues and note any characteristics of layout and style that are particular to this journal. Please read in conjunction with pages 84-86 of Survey Review 295, January 2005 and the web site www.surveyreview.org or www.maney.co.uk/journals/sre.
When submitting papers for consideration Authors should send THREE printed paper copies at A4 size - one for the Editor's file and one for each of the two referees - and keep the original on disk or file.
The copies sent to the Editor should be printed on one side of the paper only, single-spaced and include any tables, illustrations and a list of references. Authors shoud retain a fourth printed copy for personal reference, especially in case of loss or accident to the three printed copies sent to the Editor.
Wide margins should be left on each side of the typescript.
Any instructions or comments to the Editor should be circled to indicate that they are not part of the text.
Each printed copy should be sent flat and unfolded with its pages clipped or stapled toghether.
The title should be concise, indicate clearly the subject matter of the paper, and followed by name(s) of author(s) and place(s) of work. An abstract of the content of the paper and five keywords must precede the main body of text.
Although there is no strict limit on the length of papers it is preferred that they do not exceed 20 pages when published. It is fair to say that generally the longer a paper is the longer it will be before it gets published.
All photographs, figures and tables should be incorporated in the text, complete with appropriate captions.NOTE that while Survey Review still only uses black/white for the printed version, the web version can accept colour illustrations. Colour illustrations can now be accepted with submitted papers.
Authors will be notified when the Editor has received comments from both referees and any pertinent points raised will be passed on for consideration.
The list of references should be numbered in alphabetical order (by reference to the authors' surnames) and reference
numbers should be inserted (in bold type within square brackets eg. [12]) at relevant points within the text.
Proofs of papers finally accepted for publication will be emailed, in PDF format, to the author nominated for correspondence. Proofs are supplied for checking and making essential typographical corrections, not for general revision or alteration. Proofs must be returned within 48 hours of receipt.
On publication, Authors will receive a PDF file (eprint) of the published version. This PDF may be forwarded to co-authors without separate permission being required from the publisher. The PDF cannot be used for commercial purposes, but may be posted on Authors' individual websites or that of their institution. Authors are entitled to make copies of the article for reasonable personal use only. Authors may purchase printed reprints if desired; a reprint order form will be forwarded to the corresponding Author with their PDF proofs.
All material submitted for possible publication must be the original work of the author(s) and should not be under consideration for any other publication at the same time. All copyright related to material included in a paper must have been cleared by the Author(s) before submission and notice taken of the following copyright statement:
Articles submitted to the journal should be original contributions and should not be under consideration for any other publication at the same time. Authors submitting articles for publication warrant that the work is not an infringement of any existing copyright and will indemnify the publisher against any breach of such warranty. For ease of dissemination and to ensure proper policing of use, papers and contributions become the legal copyright of the publisher unless otherwise agreed.

References

Reference listing - note layout and punctuation most carefully

For books use the following form:
1. Smith, J. R., 1999. Everest, The Man and the Mountain. Whittles Publishing,
Scotland. 306 pages
(i.e. Reference number - full stop - author's surname - comma - author's initials - full stop - comma - year - full stop - title of book (italics) - full stop - edition - full stop -publisher - comma - place of publication - full stop - number of pages - full stop).

For articles which have appeared in journals use the following form:
2. Wetherelt, A.,Beer, A. J. and Russ, K. D., 1999. Development of a Low-Cost Laser
Based System for three-Dimensional Void Visualisation. Survey Review, 35 (272):
74-82.
(i.e. Reference number - full stop - author's surname - comma - author's initials - full stop - comma - year - full stop - title of paper - full stop - name of journal (italics) -comma - volume and/or number - colon - first and last page number - full stop).

References in the main text- these should be 12 pt bold numbers in square brackets NOT as names and dates e.g. [23]

Equations - mathematical symbols and letters used in the text to be in italic, trigonometric functions to be roman
- equations to be centred and their numbers in brackets right-aligned

Figure captions- use Fig. centred 9 pt
Figures -reference to in the text- use Figure 12 pt

Fig.1. Building under survey

Figure 1 illustrates the building under survey

Tables- use two horizontal rules at top and one darker one to close. Do not use vertical rules other than possibly for the first column. Ensure proper vertical alignment of column data

Table captions - use 12 pt. Roman Table and 12 pt. Italic caption
centred above table

Table 1. Observed data

Matrices and vectors - bold; but not indices and signs
Ax = b
x = A b

In the final version of a paper all diagrams and photographs should be submitted electronically in black/white NOT colour. Both photographs and line diagrams should be scanned to at least 600 dpi File formats accepted include JPEG, BMP, GIF and TIFF. Care should be taken with any data compression settings to avoid loss of detail.

All text and illustrations must be kept within an area 147 x 250 mm. i.e. at A4 size the margins are left 2cm, right 4.2 cm, top 2 cm and bottom 2.4 cm When deciding on text size to be used on illustrations Authors should remember that all material will be reduced in size to about 84% of the original prior to publication. Do NOT make lines too fine because they then do not always reproduce well.

When a paper has been accepted the Author(s) will be asked to submit ONE hard copy of their final version plus a disc containing the complete text and illustrations in their final form. The text should be in Word 97 (or compatible) and in as simple a form as possible so that it can be easily edited prior to publication. Please DO NOT add headers and footers. Invariably the Editor will have small changes to make to the text or move some around to fit the page better and this should be with the least possible effort.
